Contoura PRK

Motwani LASIK Institute, San Diego Ca.

Contoura PRK offers a precise and effective vision correction solution for patients who are not ideal candidates for LASIK or prefer a flap-free procedure. This advanced technique combines the benefits of topography-guided technology with PRK to deliver exceptional visual results. Dr. Motwani’s expertise in Contoura PRK ensures optimal outcomes and patient satisfaction.

PRK: An Alternative to LASIK

The benefits of topography-guided ablation, commonly utilized in Contoura LASIK to enhance vision quality, can also be achieved through a PRK procedure. This alternative is suitable for patients who prefer PRK, have corneas too thin for LASIK, or have specific corneal conditions requiring a PRK approach for increased safety.

Both LASIK and PRK reshape the corneal curvature to correct vision. However, they differ in the method of accessing the corneal stroma, where the reshaping occurs. LASIK involves creating a corneal flap, allowing for quicker visual recovery due to the intact epithelium. In PRK, the epithelium is removed, requiring 3-5 days for healing.

Despite the difference in healing time, the final visual outcome is comparable between LASIK and PRK. Contrary to past perceptions, PRK is not an excessively painful procedure. Modern pain management techniques, including topical pain drops and oral anti-inflammatory medications, effectively manage discomfort. Most patients can resume daily activities the following day, although driving may be restricted during the healing period due to fluctuating vision.

Dr. Motwani has personal experience with PRK, undergoing the procedure himself in 2012, followed by an enhancement in 2013. In 2020, he further refined his technique with transepithelial topography-guided PRK to demonstrate the CREATE Protocol.
